Timeline:
Every major event (and plenty of minor ones) in the history of DCUP is here.
December, 2001: Jack tells Todd he wants to start a group that will do improv for adult audiences (hearkening back to the days when they were both in Emitts Boys). The two of them immediately decide on acquiring Claire (at first for personal reasons, but later as an integral member of the group).
January, 2002: Jack, Todd, and Claire offically form a new group, adding in Liz Demery, Shawn Westfall, and Blaire Postman to round out the roster. Jack wants to call the group "Cantankerous Lawn Gnomes", or something equally retarded. No one is particularly thrilled by the notion. Claire comes up with DCUP (District of Columbia Unscripted Players) as a tribute to the performance venue (a space that used to be a Victoria's Secret). Todd says DCUP is okay, until we think of something better.
March, 2002: DCUP performs its first show for a good-sized crowd, also performing their very first Dare (Crossing the Line). The show itself was at times hilarious, and other times... well, not half bad. Let's give it a B-.
June, 2002: Rob Recklaus joins DCUP.
July, 2002: Steve Heaton joins DCUP.
September, 2002: The performance attire moves from black tee shirts and jeans to black tee shirts with the DCUP logo on them, and jeans.
December, 2002: DCUP performs at the Art-o-Matic improv festival in DC (after all of us just performed at the same festival as ComedySportz).
April, 2003: DCUP participates in the "Battle of the Comedy", a competition held at the DC Improv, pitting Stand-up Comedy against Improv Comedy. Four local stand-ups did short sets, and then DCUP did a 20 minute set of short form improv games. The audience declared DCUP the winner.
April 26, 2003: DCUP performs "The Wet Show". This was a series of wet, watery, and/or icey short-form improv games, including Oxygen Deprivation, where someone in the scene constantly has their head under water in a big fish tank; Sack of Ice, where Jack had a ziplock filled with ice cubed stuff down his pants (there was really more to it than that); Spit Take; and Slurpee (a Dare from an old Emitts Boys show).
August, 2003: DCUP performs at the ComedySportz National Tournament in DC. We also invented "MacLaughlin Rap" that night.
October, 2003: Jim Doyle's first show with DCUP. That was the one where we did the Freddy VS Jason musical. We also created Dr. Fuck-you-all that night.
April 2004: DCUP performs a show at DSI in Chapel Hill. The show was in an ice cream parlor, after hours. Very sexy.
June, 2004: The DCUP "Dare" show, where we performed four of our previous dares, and made up "That's My Anus!"
September, 2004: DCUP does its first "Big Ditties" show; a long-form musical about a bachelor party in a church. Good times.
October, 2004: "Yes And" screens at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival (in LA).
August, 2004: DCUP drives to Canada to perform at the Toronto International Improv Festival. We did Mad Libs once an hour during the drive. At the festival, Claire also performed in Dual Exhaust with Zach Ward, and Jack and Steve competed in the DSI Rap Battle.
October, 2004: Lena and Corey join DCUP, just in time to perform with us at a number of fundraisers for John Kerry. All for naught, damn it.
November 26, 2004: We sneak preview "Boneless Chicken Cabaret" in the middle of a Quick & Dirty show. It was a rousing success, and convinced us we could pull off a full-length chiken show. This is Matt's first show with DCUP.
January 7, 2005: Jack and Todd do a two-man DCUP show. It fucking rocked!
January 28, 2005: Glenn Etter, from the San Francisco Bay Area's Unscripted Theater Company (and Todd's cousin) performs with DCUP. Glenn's mom is in the audience, and boy was that show raunchy.
February 4, 2005: "Rut" is sneak previewed in the middle of a Quick & Dirty show, and does extremely well. Well enough that we decided to do it again.
February 12, 2005: Jack performs in the World Cup Comedy event at the Acme Comedy Theater in LA.
February 25, 2005: The second show that month was the very first DCUP show that Jack didn't perform in. He was in Australia at the time, but he supplied the others with several dozen phrases he might use Down Under, providing a theme for the "D" bucket in their show.
March 4, 2005: After 17 hours of flying from Sydney to San Francisco to Dulles, Jack hurries over to the newly opened Comedy Spot theater so he won't have to miss two DCUP shows in a row. He was pretty delirious for most of the show, but so was Todd, oddly enough.
Apri 23, 2005: DCUP performs with ComedySportz Richmond at the Comedy Alley, then does a DCUP show (Jack, Todd, and Claire). The reprise of their Dare "Group Sex" was a big hit.
June 3, 2005: Todd does his first Boneless Chicken show, replacing Matt (who had his ACL removed). It's the new 45-minute version of the chicken show, in an effort to avoid heat exhaustion. Jack and Claire started the show with a 20 minute "Rut" that went really well.
June 30-July 2, 2005: DCUP performs three shows as part of the San Francisco Improv Festival (Big Ditties, Boneless Chicken Cabaret, JAMbalaya). Jack, Todd, Claire, and Matt made the trek to the Bay. The Big Ditties show is a "Spysical" with David Norfleet on the keys. The Boneless Chicken show goes great (despite a technical glitch at the start of the show that most audience members thought was part of it). DCUP does "Group Sex" yet again, much to the delight of the audience.
August 10, 2005 : "Yes And" screens at The Avalon theater in Washington, DC.
November 12, 2005 : Boneless Chicken Cabaret wins the DCCF Comedy Contest. We'll be donning the chicken suits and opening for Emo Philips on April 6 at Lisner Auditorium as part of the DCCF. Spencer Humm joins DCUP.
January 13, 2006 : Boneless Chicken Cabaret performs at the Miami Improv Festival (we also debuted DCUP's Comedy Royale).
March 11, 2006 : DCUP performs their "Daisy Chain" longform and "Boneless Chickens" for the first time at Richmond's Comedy Alley.
April 6, 2006 : DCUP opens for Emo Philips at Lisner Auditorium for the start of the DC Comedy Fest.
June 17, 2006 : Boneless Chicken Cabaret performs at the ComedySportz East Coast Tournament.
August 19, 2006 : DCUP debuts their Sketch Show, and "Simon & Simon & Simon" at Comedy Alley in Richmond.
January 12-13, 2007 : DCUP performs "Simon & Simon & Simon" and "Boneless Chicken Cabaret" at the Miami Improv Festival.
January 15, 2007 : DCUP wins the Best Sketch Performance at the Miami Improv Festival.
